Frequently asked questions
Why does it ask whether MPG is US or imperial?
The two gallons are different sizes, so the same car reads about twenty per cent higher in imperial MPG than in US MPG. Both figures look perfectly ordinary on their own, so picking the wrong one gives a confident wrong answer. The price you enter is tied to the same gallon, so the two cannot drift apart.
Why is no fuel price built in?
Pump prices are revised and a stored one would look plausible long after it stopped being true, so you enter the price you are actually paying today. It also means the tool needs no network and works offline.
How is a multi-stop route averaged?
Consumption is averaged as volume per distance, which is the only way that stays correct. Averaging distance per volume instead is a real trap: two legs at five and fifteen litres per hundred kilometres average to ten, but averaging their kilometres-per-litre readings gives the equivalent of seven and a half.
