Default minimum connecting time

IATA SSIM chapter 8, §8.10.2

These are the IATA global default minimum connecting times that reservation systems use when an airport has filed no value of its own. Airports and airlines set their own minimums, which override them. It is a booking rule, not advice on whether a connection is comfortable.

Published durations are gate-to-gate block time. Adding one to the departure moment and reading the result in the arrival city's clock is the whole calculation — the date line and any daylight-saving change are already inside it.

Enter a departure city and time and the published flight duration, and read the arrival in the arrival city's own clock — with the date change, if there is one, spelled out. Add legs for a connection and you get every layover and the door-to-door total. Published durations are gate-to-gate block time, which is simply added to the departure moment, so a date-line crossing or a daylight-saving change mid-flight falls out of the arithmetic instead of needing a special case. Limits

  • Cities come from a built-in list of 194 places, not a search of every airport.

How to use it

  1. Enter the first leg

    Pick the From and To cities, then the departure date and departure time.

  2. Type the flight duration

    Enter the hours and minutes printed on the ticket as the scheduled time.

  3. Add legs for a connection

    Tap Add a leg for each onward flight and set that layover's connection type, from domestic to domestic through to a different airport.

  4. Read the itinerary

    Each leg shows the arrival in the arrival city's own clock with any date change, every layover is compared against the default minimum connecting time, and the totals give door to door, in the air and on the ground — Copy the itinerary takes them all.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the arrival sometimes show a different date?

The published duration is gate-to-gate block time, so it is added to the departure moment and the result is then read on the arrival city's clock. A date that goes forward, stays the same or even goes back is simply what that one moment looks like in the other zone, so no date-line rule is needed.

Is the connection warning telling me my layover is too short?

No. The default thresholds are the IATA global minimum connecting times that reservation systems apply when an airport has filed no value of its own. Airports and airlines publish their own minimums, which override them, and real values vary by terminal, carrier pair and aircraft. It is a booking rule, not a judgement on whether a connection is comfortable, and it never blocks anything.

How is the door-to-door total worked out?

It is the last arrival minus the first departure as absolute moments, so it already contains every layover and any clock change along the way. The flying total is shown separately so you can see how much of the trip is spent on the ground.
