The oud has strong regional and per-player tuning variation. This C-to-C tuning is named the "most common" tuning by two independent oud-specific teaching sources; a "High F" variant (F2 A2 D3 G3 C4 F4) is also widely used.

What you provide

How to use it

  1. Pick a tuning

    Choose your instrument's tuning from the list — Arabic oud is first, followed by Turkish oud, guitar, ukulele, violin and bass. Every string's target note and frequency appears below it right away.

  2. Tap Start listening

    Tap Start listening and allow microphone access when your device asks — that tap is required before the microphone can be read. If you decline it, you can still browse the tuning table.

  3. Play a string

    Pluck or bow one string at a time. The meter shows the note it detected, how many cents sharp or flat it is, and which configured string it's closest to.

  4. Tune toward the centre

    Tighten or loosen the string until the needle sits in the middle and the cents reading is close to zero — that's in tune for the reference A you set.

  5. Adjust the reference A if needed

    If you tune to a reference other than 440 Hz, type it into the Reference A field — every note name and cents reading updates to match it immediately.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the tuner?

The pitch maths is exact, but the reading is only as good as your phone's microphone and the room around it. Background noise, a cheap microphone or a noisy fan can all shift or block a reading — treat it as a helpful guide, not a calibrated instrument.

Why does it show a different note than I expect?

The detector reports whatever fundamental frequency it hears, tempered to the nearest semitone at your reference A. If a neighbouring string, a buzz or background noise is louder than the note you played, it can get picked up instead — pluck cleanly and let the other strings stop ringing first.

Does it work without a connection?

Yes. Pitch detection runs entirely on your device using the microphone signal — nothing is uploaded, recorded or sent anywhere.

Can I use a different tuning reference than A440?

Yes. The reference A field accepts any value roughly between 400 and 480 Hz, and every note and cents reading follows it.
